Akemi Rankine-Griffith is a self-taught oil painter based in Vancouver. Born to Trinidadian heritage and raised in Bangkok, her work explores the quiet beauty in everyday moments, transforming the ordinary into something dreamlike through rich and  layered brushwork. Her paintings balance intrigue and play with grounded emotion rooted in observation.

Working primarily in oil, Akemi embraces the forgiving nature of the medium. Its ability to be shaped, corrected, and refined as she paints. This fluid and responsive process is central to her practice. Rather than following rigid concepts, she lets the act of painting guide her, allowing space for mistakes, revisions, and unexpected beauty to emerge.
